Vehicle and Tool Deductions for Plumbers: Don't Leave Money on the Table

Plumbers invest heavily in trucks and tools. These represent significant tax deductions — but only if they're properly documented. Here's what to deduct and how.

A fully-equipped plumbing truck with tools can represent $40,000–$80,000 in investment. For tax purposes, that investment is deductible — but the rules differ depending on whether you deduct it all at once or over time, and how much you document the business use.

Service Trucks and Vans

Your work vehicle is almost certainly your most valuable deductible asset. For vehicles with a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) over 6,000 lbs. (which covers most full-size pickups, cargo vans, and utility trucks), you can use:

  • Section 179: Deduct the full purchase price in the year of purchase, up to $1,160,000 (2024 limit)
  • Bonus Depreciation: Deduct 60% of the vehicle cost in year one (2024 rate, phasing down from 100%)
  • Standard Depreciation (MACRS): Spread the deduction over 5 years

The key requirement: the vehicle must be used for business, and you must document the business-use percentage. A mileage log (paper or app) is your evidence. For most plumbers who use their truck exclusively for work, that's close to 100%.

Tools and Equipment

Hand tools (pipe wrenches, cutters, crimpers), power tools, drain cameras, hydro-jetting equipment, and diagnostic tools are all deductible business assets. Section 179 applies here too — you can deduct the full cost in the year of purchase for most tools and equipment. Keep receipts and records of when each item was placed in service.

The Standard Mileage vs. Actual Expense Decision

If you lease your truck or prefer a simpler approach, you can use the standard IRS mileage rate (67 cents per mile in 2024) for all business driving rather than tracking actual vehicle expenses. The standard rate is simpler but often smaller than the actual expense method for heavily-used, high-cost vehicles.

Office Equipment and Software

Don't overlook laptop computers, iPads used in the field, dispatch software, field service management tools, and phone business use. These are fully deductible and often forgotten.
